Strong governance enables health service boards to meet their governance requirements. And most importantly, it supports them to continually improve to be the best they can.

Governance Evaluator has been specifically designed to support chairs and directors to build strong governance capability through a proven process of:

In partnership with VHA and ACHG our new Clinical Governance Module has been credibly written by Dr Grant Phelps. It has been trialled and tested over the last 6 months by a Think Tank group of clinical and industry experts.

Each module and subsequent question commences with a brief easy to read or watch video introduction that notes recommended best practice and contextualises the question.

Governance Evaluator is a very flexible platform. As the chair, you can use it to lead your board through the process, fully supported by the GE governance expert customer service. Or, you can use one of our accredited independent convenors – experts in the health sector – to lead your board though the process.

We understand the key focus for governing clinical care for health services and the need for our boards to build their knowledge and capabilities in this area. It is crucial that the accredited convenors for the health sector have strong clinical governance skills and experience in order to support boards and their organisations to build their capabilities for clinical governance. Therefore, we are developing a team of such experts and are proud to introduce our lead convenors.

Dr Grant Phelps: expert convenor for the health sector

I am committed to doing what I can to improve Australia’s health system. I have worked extensively across many facets of our system, from hands on care delivery in the public and private sector, to influencing state and national policy settings for safety and quality, and now to teaching and enabling better clinical leaders. This experience has demonstrated time and again the importance of effective governance and management on system improvement.

I bring intimate knowledge of the healthcare industry, as an experienced clinician, a policy maker and manager, and a change agent with high level experience in two jurisdictions and in the national policy context. In addition, I have consulted widely to government and health care organisations on clinical staff engagement and service level leadership. I also have considerable experience with clinical research in the biotech area, having been local lead investigator for a number of multicentre trials when in clinical practice.

I am active in leading within the profession, having served in a number of roles (including several years on the board) of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Australasia’s largest and most diverse medical specialty college.  This at a time of major change in the field of postgraduate medical education and in healthcare more generally. I am currently President of the Adult Division of the College – Australasia’s largest grouping of specialist and trainee specialist medical practitioners, and have previously led major work in safety and quality and professionalism within the College.

My experience and knowledge enables me to make significant contributions to health organisations in their efforts to meet current and future governance challenges.

Alison Brown: expert convenor for the health sector

I started off my work life in health services wanting, like all clinicians, to do my best for the people who came to see me. That led me to pursue an interest in work with health services to develop environments where excellence in healthcare could flourish. I transitioned from work as a quality manager at a health service level to develop state wide initiatives (via a Master’s in Public Health ) to strengthen governance and clinical governance. This in turn has led to my involvement in numerous expert advisory groups both at the state and national level advising on issues related to healthcare quality and safety.

Over the past decade I have focused on the challenges of board governance. I have been involved in the development of innovative new approaches to healthcare governance such as the development of guidelines and resources for the internal audit of clinical areas. I am currently undertaking research as part of my PhD candidacy at the University of Melbourne to examine the characteristics of effective governance of healthcare quality in health services in Australia. This has given me the opportunity to explore in depth the challenges and successful approaches in the contemporary governance of healthcare. The research combined with extensive consultancy experience and of course experience as a board member gives me the knowledge, skills and passion to work with organisations to explore areas for governance development.
